Week of November 9

This will be a very short week. Plan on coming to class for the introduction to databases. While there are similarities between spreadsheets and databases, databases are more powerful in terms of data minipulation. Instead of one spreadsheet, you'll be working with objects: tables, queries, reports, and forms. The underlying data will be stored in a table, but you'll be able to "see" the data from different views, via forms, queries, and reports.

Wednesday is a holiday. On Friday, Nov. 13, your instructor will be attending an off-campus meeting. The room may be left open if someone volunteers to come early.

Week of November 2

This week you'll be starting on the Spreadsheet Project, which is due by 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4. On Wednesday, plan to taking an objective in-class exam based on computer and Excel concepts. Reviews are provided in the Resources folder and in the Module 3 links. On Friday, there will be a wrap-up in-class exercise.

Week of October 26

This week Excel Project 9B will be due on Monday. You may also work on an optional project, 10A. There will be Excel reviews on Wednesday and Friday. Please be prepared to have a member of your group explain your PowerPoint/Excel resource on Friday. If you would like to have more practice, work on Project 9C and 9D in the Go! with Microsoft Office 2007 textbook. Both projects are similar to the Excel project.

Week of October 19

This week Excel Project 9A will be due on Wednesday. A group project on terminology which may be completed in a spreadsheet or presentation format was originally scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, but it will be moved to Monday, Oct. 25. A bonus opportunity on functions is posted in the Module 3 calendar.

Week of October 12

This is the first week of Module 3 which covers Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheets. We'll begin on Monday with an introduction to Excel and some numeric keypad drills. You will also be getting the new list of terms to study for this module on Wednesday, and an introduction to Charts on Friday.

Week of October 5

This is the last week for Module 2. Please complete the Works Cited page assignment. The purpose of this assignment was to give you practice in formatting a document of this type. This job is worth up to 5 points.

If you have already completed Project 7A, you may begin the final project, which involves a preparing a short report with a works cited page. You may "use" the Gaskin text as one of your citations. In addition, please find someone from an older generation to interview. Be sure to cite the interview in your works cited page. Use Bing.com to find a quote related to technology or computers. EasyBib is recommended if you don't own Word 2007. A template, instructions, and a sample are provided for you in Laulima. This project will be due by Friday, Oct. 9, at 11:45 p.m.

The Module 2 quiz is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9, in class. It will consist of an objective test based on computer and word processing concepts covered in Module 2.  You can prepare for this by doing the following:

  • In MyItLab in the Technology in Action folder, take a look at Chapter 2 in the Soundbytes section.  There is a link to an online discussion on computer hardware.
  • Review terms posted by the groups in the Laulima Resources folder; review the remainder of the terms on your own.
  • Borrow a textbook and review the vocabulary presented in the Computer Concepts chapter.
  • In Laulima in the second column, look for the Website Companion link and the word "Welcome."  Click on the drop-down and locate assigned Chapters 5, 6, & 7. Look at the glossary and the practice quiz.
  • Review other links relating to terms in Laulima in Module 2: citing sources, tables, terms part 1, works cited, diacritical marks.

Updated October 7, 2009

 Week of September 28

This week we'll go over terms which may appear in the objective quiz coming up on October 9. For this activity, please obtain a gmail account. On Wednesday, part of the class will be spent on using some of the electronic references available to you via our library. We'll also use a citation builder. By the end of the week, you will be starting on Projects 7A and 7B.

Week of September 21

This week the focus will be on using Word 2007 as a tool in preparing reports. In Project 6A you learned about the differences in vertical line spacing when you choose "Normal" or "No Spacing." In "No Spacing," the user has to key the Enter twice between paragraphs. Project 6A will be worth up to 5 optional points. In Project 6B you will see how you can enter important information in fields such as citation information as you prepare the actual document. This information is saved. Later you may use in in another part of your report without having to rekey text. Concentrate on 6B because it will be very useful in preparing research papers. On Friday, your instructor will be covering diacritical marks (okina and kahako) and tables.

If you have not yet looked at the Website Companion, please do so. There is a glossary for Projects 5, 6, and 7 and practice quizzes which will help to prepare you for the objective exam scheduled for October 9.

Week of September 14

This week, plan on working on e-mail and word processing exercises with your instructor. If you would like to work on Projects 5A and 5B independently, you may do so in MyItLab. Otherwise, your instructor will be leading the class through the projects. By the end of the week, you should be familiar with creating and saving a new document, editing text, and printing a document. In addition, you will learn shortcuts and various methods of navigating in a Word windows, adding graphics to a document, using the spelling and grammar checker, previewing and closing a document, and closing Word. Create a Module 2 folder in your ICS 100 folder in Drive F. Copy the contents of the word processing folder in the Go folder, which is located in Drive M. A major change that occurred in Word 2007 relates to vertical spacing. Listen carefully to the discussion on "Normal" spacing vs. "No Spacing."

Week of September 7

On Wednesday, your assignment will be to work on Project 15B in MyITLab. The project will be due by 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, in MyItLab. You will be receiving another e-mail with a PowerPoint attachment. This attachment will be used to create a 5-slide project. Please do not add or delete any slides from the assignment. When you are done, you may delete the "scripts" from each notes pane. You have the option to add any notes of your own. This project will be due by 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Week of August 31

On Monday, continue the Group Scavenger Hunt project. Each of you has been assigned specific responsibilities. Be sure to share your particular skills with other members of your team and copy your work to the team flash drive. By 4 p.m. today your files should be uploaded to your F drive in the proper location.

If you have an access code to MyItLab, talk to your instructor. In the Module 1 calendar, there is a course code that you need to have in order to register for MyItLab. Participate in the introductory lesson 15A with the class. 15A will be worth up to 10 points. For homework, if you have an access code, review the EDD presentation. If you do not have an access code, read Project 15A in the text.

Sometime during the week, your instructor will be introducing you to UH Webmail. Two e-mails have already been sent to you; please do not delete them because you'll need them for the e-mail practice assignments.
